Survey of area waters tallies 74 manatees

By Times Staff Writer
Published September 1, 2005

Staff of the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge counted 74 manatees in area waters during an aerial survey Wednesday.

That count included 62 manatees in Kings Bay, five in the Crystal River, six in the Halls River and one in the lower Homosassa River. None were seen in the Salt River, the Homosassa Blue Waters or the power plant discharge canal. The survey did not include the barge canal due to storms in the area.

Manatee season speed zones in area waters go into effect today and run through March 31. Manatees flock into warm spring-fed waters in the area each winter to escape the cooling waters in the Gulf of Mexico.
