St. Petersburg splits meet with Seminole

ST. PETERSBURG - While the St. Petersburg/Seminole matchup may have lost some of its luster because of the reshuffling of classifications and districts, the intensity still was present at the George W. Stovall Aquatic Center.

The St. Petersburg boys cruised 109-78 behind the strength of seniors Brent Sunnucks and Kevin Nardozzi. Sunnucks finished first in the butterfly (54.71) and second in the 50 freestyle, while Nardozzi took first in the 200 IM (2:05.49) and second in the 100 backstroke.

Sunnucks and Nardozzi helped fellow seniors John-Paul Newfield and Andy Stoddard dominate the 200 freestyle relay (1:38.45) and 200 medley relay (1:43.91).

"This is a huge boost for us," Sunnucks said. "Seminole's always tough and to beat them the way we did helps our confidence leading into next week's meet (against perennial favorite Palm Harbor U.)."

The Warhawks were led by Andrew Blazuk (50 free in 22.78 and 100 back in 55.10), Paul Hoffman (200 free in 1:56.07 and 500 free in 5:05.38) and Alex Metka (100 free in 50.36 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.19).

"We're pretty strong in every event," Nardozzi said. "It's important for us as a team to have guys finish in second and third if we can't win a heat."

For the girls, St. Petersburg lost 100-78, but another school record fell as freshman Tracy Rorer's 2:09.68 in the 200 IM topped Kristen Nardozzi's 1999 mark.

Two weeks ago, in the Green Devils intersquad meet, Rorer swam the 100 fly in 59.99 to better Cindy Burns' 1978 time of 1:00.79. Rorer missed breaking another record Wednesday by less than a second in the 100 breaststroke.

"It's a lot more relaxing to swim in high school as opposed to club because there isn't as much pressure," Rorer said. "To have all your teammates pulling for you helps me stay relaxed and focus throughout my swim."

In addition to winning the 200 IM and the 100 breast (1:07.79), Rorer teamed with Allie Evans, Alceste Laurenti and Sarah Faulkner to take the 200 free and 200 medley relay.
