FAMILY FEST The IR-RU Family Social Club has announced its grand opening for Labor Day weekend. Festivities start with karaoke from 6 to 10 p.m. today. Saturday will feature entertainment by Johnny Lobo starting at 6. On Sunday, entertainment will be provided by Katie Lynn from 4 to 8 p.m. Karaoke will be offered from 2 until 6 on Monday. Other activities include a dunk tank and the Coors Light Beer Girls. The IR-RU Club is at 9211 S Florida Ave. (U.S. 41) in Floral City. Call 637-5118.
DANCE: The Beverly Hills Recreation Association Clubhouse, 77 Civic Circle, will host a dance with the Starburst Band from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. today. Setups and popcorn are available. Coffee and cake are free.
THE CITRUS COMMUNITY BAND is rehearsing at 6 p.m. Tuesdays at the band room at Lecanto High under the direction of Don Rowe and Nancy Gordon. The 50-piece band, which has openings in all sections at this time, is a concert band that performs throughout the county for community events. Concerts are planned at the Beverly Hills rec center, the Crystal River Mall, the New England Club and several veterans' functions. Repertoire includes marches, Broadway show tunes, swing jazz and classical. Anyone who wants to have the band play at one of their events or meetings, or anyone hoping to dust off their high school instrument and join in for the first time, should call John Durbin at 795-1863.
LAUGHS: Comedian James Sibley will headline at 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Giggles Comedy Club at the Park Inn Hotel, 4076 S Suncoast Blvd., in Homosassa. The featured performer will be Tim Kidd. Tickets are $7. Doors open for dinner at 7:30. Call 628-4311 for information.
THE SUGARMILL CHORALE begins its season with a potluck supper and evening of entertainment at 6 p.m. Thursday in Webster Fellowship Hall of First Presbyterian Church of Crystal River, 1501 SE U.S. 19. The HAMS band of First Presbyterian Church will sing and provide entertainment along with other members of the chorale. The new director is Debbie Allen, and the accompanist is Martin Bachthaler. The Sugarmill Chorale, now 27 years old, performs two concerts each year: one at the Christmas holidays and the other in the spring near Easter with a repertoire that includes a mix of classical, sacred and secular music. WORLD WAR II exhibit, Warriors, Navajo Code Talkers, is the current exhibit in the John Murray Davis Gallery at the Old Courthouse Heritage Museum, One Courthouse Square, Inverness. Warriors is comprised of a series of photos of the Navajo U.S. Marines who created a code based on the Navajo language. The code was used to help direct the U.S. military in actions against the Japanese during WWII. Photographer Ken Kawano, whose work is highlighted, will be at the museum on Sept. 23. The exhibit will be at the museum through Nov. 15. Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday; 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Call 341-6429. Free admission.
LOOK AHEAD

YUPO DEMO Anne Welch will demonstrate her technique in applying watercolor to Yupo paper on Thursday at the Art and Education Center at the Citrus County Art League, 2644 N Annapolis Ave., Citrus Hills. Yupo is a nonabsorbent synthetic and erasable watercolor paper. The meeting starts at 12:30 p.m. with refreshments and a business meeting. The demonstration begins at 1:30 p.m. The program is open to the public for $3 fee.
JAZZ UP DUNNELLON features food and music in an outdoor setting from 5 to 10 p.m. Oct. 8. The food is Cajun and Creole, available from street vendors. Music will be jazz and blues. Entertainers include Joe Michel Quintet; Valerie Levy; Nino Castenada; Rick Dahlinger Trio; Spectacular Gimmicks; Ocalaco; and Liz Pennock & Dr. Blues. Ocala Carriage and Tours will offer rides along the entertainment route. Capt. Mike's Lazy River Cruises will have 45-minute river trips on the hour from 3 to 6 p.m. at $10 per person. Motorcycles, and antique and classic cars will be on display. Use Dunnellon Middle School off Cedar Street CR 40 for parking and ride the free shuttle to the library. The Dunnellon Area Chamber of Commerce sells $1 wristbands that are good for food discounts. Performers include Williams and Clark Expedition, the Flint River Boys, Blue Moon Rising, the Gillis Brothers, Jeanette Williams, Tater Hill, the Sawgrass Drifters, Scattered Grass and Swinging Bridge. OLD TIMEY: The annual Pioneer Days Festival will be held Saturday through Monday at Pioneer Florida Museum and Village off U.S. 301 northeast of Dade City. The event will include a variety of music and entertainment, plus a Civil war re-enactment, arts, crafts, children's activities, classic car displays and more throughout the weekend.
