Pinellas school district receives fuel shipment

The transportation schedule can continue normally at least through Wednesday, officials say.

The Pinellas school district received 22,500 gallons of diesel fuel early Friday, averting a possible transportation crisis, at least for the time being.

The delivery ensures that children can be transported to and from school Tuesday and Wednesday following the three-day Labor Day weekend, officials said.

Concern arose Thursday that the district might have to curtail services as early as Tuesday unless a diesel shipment arrived today. A shipment expected several days ago did not come because of fuel shortages brought on by Hurricane Katrina.

Before the shipment arrived, the district had only 6,556 gallons of diesel, barely enough for buses to run normally through today.

"It sounds like the pipeline might be opening up," said district spokesman Sterling Ivey. "We're out of immediate danger. Regular deliveries will help us catch up."
