Eagles cut vets; trio suspended

Published September 4, 2005

It was cutdown day Saturday in the NFL. It was also suspension day.

While veterans Hugh Douglas, Jon Ritchie and Sean Landeta were released by Philadelphia and former first-round pick David Terrell was let go by New England, the league suspended three players for four games - Kansas City offensive lineman John Welbourn, Cincinnati defensive end Duane Clemons, and Cleveland defensive back Michael Jameson.

Welbourn will miss four games for violation of the league's steroid policy. Jameson and Clemons were suspended for an unspecified violation of the league's substance abuse policy.

The Vikings waived former Hillsborough High and Florida offensive tackle Shannon Snell, who was trying to earn a roster spot while keeping an eye on his twins, Kaleb and Madison, who were born seven weeks premature July 29 at University Community Hospital in Tampa.

The Eagles released two veterans who had been plagued by injuries and 42-year-old punter Landeta, as they got down to the opening 53-man roster before the deadline.

Douglas, 34, who had 37 sacks for Philadelphia, was re-signed by the Eagles last season after being released by Jacksonville, where he spent 2003. Ritchie, who turns 31 today, missed most of last season with a knee injury.

In addition to Terrell, New England also cut receiver P.K. Sam out of Florida State.

The Giants let go quarterback Jesse Palmer, a former Gator known better for his appearance on the television show The Bachelor than for anything on the field during four seasons in New York.

Price quickly finds home

IRVING, Texas - Receiver Peerless Price decided Saturday to join the Cowboys, primarily because of the chance to be reunited with quarterback Drew Bledsoe.

Price accepted a one-year deal, agent Tim McGee said. The Cowboys did not include Price on the 53-man roster, an indication the deal must still be signed. When that happens, perhaps today, Dallas likely will drop receiver Quincy Morgan, who made the cut.

BRONCOS: Jerry Rice has a spot on the roster, but the league's all-time leading receiver isn't sure he wants it. Rice flew to his home in the San Francisco area to decide whether to play this season or retire after coach Mike Shanahan told Rice he wouldn't be among the team's top three receivers, according to Rice's agent Jim Steiner. Steiner said he expects Rice to make a decision by Monday. ... Running back Quentin Griffin, the opening-day starter last season, was the most surprising of 19 cuts.

DOLPHINS: Gus Frerotte has won the quarterback job - at least for the first game. After none of the three quarterbacks emerged as an obvious choice during the preseason, new coach Nick Saban said Frerotte will start the opener against Denver on Sept. 11. ... Running back Jesse Chatman signed after spending the past three years with the Chargers.

49ERS: Veteran defensive lineman Travis Hall, released by the Falcons in February after 10 seasons, signed.

REDSKINS: Receiver Kevin Dyson, a seven-year veteran who has played in two Super Bowls, was released. Cornerback Garnell Wilds, a Hillsborough High grad, was also cut.

SEAHAWKS: Former coach Chuck Knox will be inducted into the team's "Ring of Honor." Knox coached Seattle from 1983-1991, compiling an 80-63 record. He ranks seventh in league history with 193 career victories.

Late Friday

BRONCOS 30, CARDINALS 21: Visiting Denver won though none of its starters played. Bradlee Van Pelt had three touchdown passes for the Broncos.
