ST. PETERSBURG - Acclaimed composer, conductor and pianist Glenn Burleigh will present a three-day workshop next month at the First Presbyterian Church of St. Petersburg, 701 Beach Drive NE.
Sessions on Oct. 13-14 are 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. The Oct. 15 sessions are 9:30 a.m. to noon and 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
The cost is $15 per person.
A free concert, open to the public, is 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 15 at the church. It is sponsored in part by the Florida Humanities Council and the Pinellas County Arts Council.
Burleigh, whose works offer a fusion of classical, gospel and and jazz music, is coming at the behest of the Alumni Singers, a St. Petersburg choral group celebrating its 25th anniversary. As part of its observance, the group has made community outreach a goal.
The Alumni Singers offer music in several genres, but spirituals are the group's specialty. The form has a rich history, and it is particularly relevant to the African-American experience in America.
Burleigh's work has taken him to such prestigious stages as Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
