ACC: Late field goal lifts Clemson over Texas A&M

CLEMSON, S.C. - Jad Dean kicked his school-record sixth field goal with 2 seconds left as the host Tigers downed No. 17 Texas A&M 25-24.

Clemson played the final quarter without starting quarterback Charlie Whitehurst, who left after a hard hit to his helmet.

Dean was 6-of-6 on the night with field goals of 21, 21, 25, 18 and 44 yards before his game-winner.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Marques Hagans threw for one touchdown and ran for another and the mistake-prone Cavaliers did most of their scoring in the first 171/2 minutes.

Virginia, unable to stop the Broncos' short passing game most of the night, led only 24-19 when the Cavaliers finally got the stop they needed with 11 minutes remaining in the game.

On fourth-and-4 from the Virginia 31, Tony Franklin and Jermaine Dias tackled tight end Brandon Ledbetter 3 yards short of a first down.

Twelve plays and 69 yards later, freshman Cedric Peerman gave the Cavaliers some breathing room, scoring on a 1-yard run to make it 31-19 with 5:38 remaining.

MARYLAND 23, NAVY 20: Sam Hollenbach threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Drew Weatherly with 61 seconds left, capping a frantic 82-yard drive that carried Maryland in Baltimore. Hollenbach went 19-for-30 for 217 yards, and Mario Merrills ran for 149 yards on 30 carries to help Maryland recover from an early 11-point deficit in the opener for both teams.

After a 6-yard touchdown run by Matt Hall gave Navy a 20-15 lead with 4 minutes, 43 seconds left, Hollenbach brought the Terrapins back. The key play came just before the touchdown, when Lance Ball took a short pass on a fourth-and-8 from the Navy 31 and slipped several tackles during a 20-yard gain.

Hollenbach then fired the winning pass to Weatherly in the middle of the end zone before Merrills ran in the conversion.

BOSTON COLLEGE 20, BYU 3: Will Blackmon caught eight passes for 100 yards, returned a kickoff and a punt and even played some defensive back as the visiting Eagles rolled.

Boston College spoiled new BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall's debut and became the first team to beat the Cougars in a season opener since Florida State in 2000.

BYU couldn't stop the Eagles' short passing game, allowing Quinton Porter to complete 27 of 35 passes to 10 different receivers.

BYU's John Beck completed 41 of 60 passes for 330 yards - all but 8 of the Cougars' total yards. The Eagles sacked Beck twice and kept him from completing any passes longer than 26 yards.

EAST CAROLINA 24, DUKE 21: James Pinkney ran for two touchdowns and threw for another as host East Carolina won in Skip Holtz's Pirates coaching debut.

Aundrae Allison had 10 catches for 164 yards and a score for the Pirates. Zach Baker added two interceptions and a fumble recovery.
