Crist on e-mail: It's a good thing; on spam: not so much

By DAVE GUSSOW
Published September 5, 2005

Gov. Jeb Bush likes technology. He uses technology. E-mail is his thing.

Yet one of the leading candidates to replace the governor, someone Bush hired for his first administration in 1999, doesn't seem into it quite as much.

Attorney General Charlie Crist, speaking in Tampa last week, praised the Internet, though he said more has to be done to protect children online. And, he says, Florida has played a big role in the tech world, though he didn't elaborate.

Tech didn't get really personal for Crist until around 1999. After Bush appointed Crist to be deputy secretary for the Department of Business and Professional Regulation, someone asked Crist about e-mail. But he didn't have an e-mail account.

Now he does. And his view?

"It's a good thing." Except for spam, of course. "Nobody likes it."
