How to help hurricane victims

On Sunday, the Florida Governor's Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service, Volunteer Florida, put out a call to Florida residents to join in to help victims of Hurricane Katrina by donating bottled water, nonperishable food and other needed items to organized collection sites. Here are some of the local businesses, agencies and organizations seeking donations:
South Pinellas
Solid Rock Christian Ministries and other local groups are seeking donations to fill a box truck, minivan and pick-up truck that will head for Mississippi and Louisiana at 8 p.m. today. Donations can be dropped off at Solid Rock Church, 4224 28th St. N, St. Petersburg. Items needed include non-perishable canned food (pop-top or with can opener), bottled water, clothes, cooking utensils, propane stoves and extra propane for field kitchens, and cash. Checks payable to the Refuge can be dropped off at the church or deposited directly into the Refuge of Pinellas Inc. special projects account at any Wachovia bank. American Stage will present a staged reading of Tennessee William's classic New Orleans play A Streetcar Named Desire at 7 p.m. Sept. 25 at 211 Third St. S, St. Petersburg. A $25 minimum donation will go to the American Red Cross. There will also be an auction of artwork that will include one-of-a-kind photos of Jon Voight and Hersha Parady in their historic production of A Streetcar Named Desire at the Ahmanson Theatre in Los Angeles. The Tampa Bay Devil Rays will offer a monetary collection program during every home game in September. Collection points will be set up at Gates 1, 4 and 5 at Tropicana Field. United Way of Tampa Bay is coordinating the distribution of the funds received. Also, the annual "Shirts Off Our Back" promotion on Oct. 2 will benefit the hurricane victims. For a suggested donation of $1, fans can win the game-used, autographed uniform tops of the Rays players and coaches following the final game of the season.
The city of Indian Rocks Beach will collect items for victims of Hurricane Katrina from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today through Friday at the City Hall auditorium, 1507 Bay Palm Blvd.h. Items sought include bottled water, nonperishable food items, manual can openers, baby food, diapers, baby wipes, hygiene items, small charcoal grills and charcoal, gloves, tarps, plastic, construction materials, over the counter medications, first aid kits, flashlights, batteries, candles, trash bags, generators, chain saws and hand tools. All donations will be delivered to the St. Petersburg Times Forum at 3:30 p.m. Friday to be transported to affected areas. Call (727) 595-2517.
The Pinellas Park Police Department Volunteers will be collecting donations for Hurricane Katrina victims until 5 p.m. Sept. 9. Donations will be accepted at all city buildings during normal business hours; at city fire stations from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and at the Police Department lobby at anytime. Items sought include bottled water, nonperishable food items, manual can openers, baby food, diapers, baby wipes, hygiene items, small charcoal grills and charcoal, tools, gloves, tarps, plastic, first aid kits, flashlights, batteries, candles, trash bags and pet food. Donations will be delivered to the St. Pete Times Forum to be transported to affected areas. Call (727) 541-0761.
North Pinellas
SPCA Tampa Bay is taking donations to assist animal shelters damaged by Hurricane Katrina and to send volunteers to the Gulf Coast. Send checks payable to SPCA to: 9099 130th Ave. N, Largo 33773-1441. Write on check: Hurricane Katrina Relief or SPCA DART Team. For information, call (727) 586-3591.
The Little Gym of Palm Harbor, 33287 U.S. 19, N, will accept donations through Friday that will be sent to the St. Pete Times Forum for distribution to New Orleans and other areas on the Gulf Coast. Items needed include money, bottled water, nonperishable food, diapers and baby wipes, hygiene items, small charcoal grills, charcoal, gloves, tarps, plastic, construction materials, over the counter medicines, first aid kits, flashlights, batteries, candles, trash bags, generators, chain saws and hand tools. Creative Painting, 11151 66th St. N, Suite 203, Largo, will donate 1 percent of money paid for their services to Hurricane Katrina victims. Their services include residential or commercial interior or exterior painting, exterior foam banding installation and bead boarding for lanais ceilings. Free estimates. Call (727) 393-4840.
Hillsborough
The Tampa Bay Lightning will give a free preseason game ticket, as supplies last, to those who make a minimum $20 donation for Hurricane Katrina relief. Ticketmaster has waived all fees for tickets bought at www.ticketmaster.com. all proceeds will benefit Hurricane Katrina relief charities.
The St. Pete Times Forum, 401 Channelside Drive, is collecting relief items 24 hours a day through Sept. 10. Items should be brought to Forum's McDonald's Box Office and the Chrysler-Jeep Plaza. Recommended donations include new or unused, wrapped and clearly marked: blankets, clothing, tools, construction materials, non-perishable food, First Aid kits, can openers, batteries, candles, baby food, diapers, wipes, hygiene items, generators, and bottled water.
The Florida Aquarium is collecting donations for the Audubon Aquarium of the Americas in New Orleans. A donation box is in Florida Aquarium lobby or checks can be made out to The Florida Aquarium, Inc, for: Hurricane Relief Effort.
