Substation fire causes power outage

By TIMES STAFF
Published September 5, 2005

About 2,000 homes in South Tampa lost power for a few hours Monday after a Tampa Electric substation caught fire. Firefighters arrived at the distributor substation, at MacDill and Bay Court avenues, at 6:23 p.m., said Tampa Fire Rescue spokesman Capt. Bill Wade.

Firefighters kept the fire from spreading to nearby homes while Tampa Electric made sure the power to the substation was out. The substation contained a transformer and 3,000 gallons of cooling oil, Wade said, which fed the fire and produced thick, black smoke.

Tampa Electric crews rerouted power for neighbors, said spokesman Ross Bannister. Many customers had regained power by 8:15 p.m.
