Wedding bells will ring at Elks lodge fundraiser

HUDSON - Aripeka Elks Lodge 2520 will have a mock wedding at 5 p.m. Saturday at 9135 Denton Ave., Hudson.

Joined in mock wedding bliss will be Gyrena Marina Duzemall, who will play the groom, and Raymond Hazalot, who will play the bride.

Those attending are asked to bring a dish to pass for the feast table. A cash prize of $100 will be awarded to the man with the best "hootchie mama" costume.

Tickets are $6 a person and will be available at the lodge's bar. All proceeds will benefit the Florida Elks Children's Therapy Service to purchase a van equipped to perform physical and occupational therapy. A licensed therapist will travel to the homes of children, newborn to age 18, to offer free therapy services.

Nature Coast High opens fall semester registration

BROOKSVILLE - Nature Coast Technical High School/Hernando Adult and Community Education is accepting registration for the fall semester, including the following computer classes.

Beginning computers, 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesdays beginning Sept. 14 at Springstead High School, 3300 Mariner Blvd., Spring Hill.

Word processing, 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursdays beginning Sept. 15 at Springstead High.

Learning the Internet, 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays beginning Sept. 20 at Springstead High.

Office Suite/Web Design, 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays beginning Sept. 20 at Nature Coast Technical, 4057 California St.

Basic Word Processing, 6 to 8 p.m. each Tuesday beginning Sept. 20 at Nature Coast.

Basic Keyboarding, 4:30 to 6 p.m. each Thursday at Fox Chapel Middle School beginning Sept. 22 and Fox Chapel Middle School, 9412 Fox Chapel Lane, Spring Hill.

City Hall art gallery offers new showing of 10 quilts

BROOKSVILLE - Bonnie Staveski and Ruth Redeker, quilt coordinators, have added a new showing of quilts to the Brooksville City Hall Art Gallery. There are 10 quilts, which include the works of Carol McCarthy, Bonnie Staveski, Bonnie Giustozzi, Terri Wessling and Ruth Redeker. One of the most well-known quilts displayed is the Hernando Heritage Quilt, which is preserved under glass. Work on this quilt began April 14, 1992, and was completed Sept. 16, 1993. The 22 blocks, each portraying a part of the county's history, took 320 hours to complete.

Community services seeks children for Head Start

BROOKSVILLE - Mid-Florida Community Services is recruiting students for the 2005-2006 Head Start program for 3- and 4-year-old children. The federally funded preschool program is offered at the Moton Earl Intervention Center, 835 School St. The program also serves children and families with special needs. Girl Scouts hope to draw new members with rallies

SPRING HILL - The Spring Mermaids Service Unit of the Girls Scouts of Suncoast Council will kick off the 2005-2006 membership year with registration rallies at the following locations:

Alzheimer's group to offer free course to caregivers

BROOKSVILLE - Alzheimer's Association Florida Gulf Coast Chapter will offer a basic course for caregivers 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the Lykes Memorial Library, 238 Howell Ave.

Topics will include dementia and Alzheimer's symptoms, communication, behavior changes and financial, legal and caregiver concerns. The free course is available to all caregivers. For information, call Jerry Fisher at 688-4537.

Harmonizers looking to recruit new sets of pipes

WEEKI WACHEE - Hernando Harmonizers is looking for members to join the Barbershop Harmony Society. Men of all ages are invited to attend a meeting at 6:45 p.m. Monday at Nativity Lutheran Church, 6363 Commercial Way, to come and hear what a cappella singing is all about. Rehearsals have begun for the Dec. 4 Christmas show. The Harmonizers perform at many functions and compete with other chapters in the Spring Hill area. Aerobics classes open at Brooksville Activity Center

The Hernando County Board of County Commissioners Parks & Recreation will offer a combination class of low-impact aerobics and/or step combo that emphasizes cardiovascular fitness and floor exercises for strengthening, toning and flexibility. Steps and weights are provided. Beginners and intermediate students can modify the class to their needs.

Classes will be held 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. each Monday and Wednesday at the Brooksville Activity Center, 205 E Fort Dade Ave. The first class is free; all future classes are $4. For information, call 754-4031.

YMCA gears up for fourth annual Run to Remember

SPRING HILL - The Hernando County Family YMCA will conduct its fourth annual 5K Run to Remember event at 7 a.m. Sunday, followed by a brief prayer service in remembrance of the September 11, 2001, attack on the World Trade Center . All runners are welcome to participate in this free event and each runner will receive a Run to Remember T-shirt. Child care will be provided during the race. Spectators also are welcome. The event will take place rain or shine. Sheriff Richard Nugent will lead the runners into the Seven Hills subdivision and Spring Hill Fire Rescue will follow all racers to the end of the race. Jam session to kick off jazz society's new season

SPRING HILL - The Hernando Jazz Society will open its new season at 1:30 p.m. Sunday with Sax Times 3, playing the music of the Big Band Era. Downtown market to get new hours, needs vendors

BROOKSVILLE - A new, extended Market on Main Street will open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 17 in downtown historic Brooksville. The open-air market will include antiques, collectibles, jewelry, arts, crafts, produce, shrubbery, baskets and woodwork. Child advocacy program needs new volunteers

The Guardian Ad Litem Program needs volunteers to act as advocates for children who have been abused, abandoned or neglected. Members of the program are appointed by the 5th Judicial Circuit Court to offer representation to these children who can't speak for themselves. Their motto is "Never Having to Say No." A 40-hour training program and court watch will be given, with a coach and mentor assisting during the process. For information, call 754-4226.
