Briefs: The good ship vino
By CHRIS SHERMAN
Published September 7, 2005
What better place for wine festivals and seminars than on a cruise? The big lines already brag on their food, and the captain in the white cap is a reliable designated driver. Here are a couple of ideas:
- Kent and Kathy Rosenblum will host an exploration of the zin with dinners, tastings and seminars featuring Rosenblum Cellars zinfandels and other wine. The Nov. 18-21 cruise sets sail from Long Beach, Calif., with a stop in Ensenada to visit Baja wineries. Contact Eric Cantrell at 916 947-4583 or e-mail getaways_4u@yahoo.com Prices start at $386.45, and reservations need to be made by Sept. 19.
- Carnival christens its new superliner Liberty with a six-day cruise from Fort Lauderdale on Dec. 4 to celebrate its new President's Wine Club. Carnival president Bob Dickinson is an avid wine collector. On the wine cruise Dickinson and other experts will host tastings, seminars and dinners with Brancott, Campo Viejo, Clos du Bois, Mumm and other wineries. Prices start at $549 for wine club members. SERVE 'EM UP
Hamilton Beach's Wave Station 12-speed blender dispenses drinks from a spigot, making it a perfect party accessory.
The wave action forces contents down to the blades, which is helpful when making icy drinks such as margaritas. It also comes in 8- and 10-speed models.
The suggested retail price is $50. Look for it at housewares stores or check out online sources at www.hamiltonbeach.com
CHEERS WITH DOM
The 1998 vintage of Dom Perignon ($150) is due on shelves this month and is touted as being "impressively conducive to food pairings." It better be, for that price.
