  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Wine of the week

By CHRIS SHERMAN
Published September 7, 2005

Falesco Vitiano Bianco 2004

A bright idea for a perfect summer white from Falesco, a bright name in affordable quality from near Orvieto, Umbria, in central Italy.

Three lovely white grapes come together in this blend, and not one has the initials P.G. The grape varieties all start instead with V: vermentino and viognier for aroma and flavor and verdicchio for crispness. (The label's red could be called a super-Umbrian blend of sangiovese and Bordeaux grapes, except that it only costs 10 bucks, too.)

Keep it cold and it still smells of grass and flowers and tastes of pears and clean, crisp citrus, not the least sour, round and easy in the mouth. It'll refresh a day in the garden, go on a picnic or stand up to seafood, salad and dinners light and spicy.

This is a wine that wants to chill out.

Availability: About $10 at wine shops and liquor stores.
