ONEONTA, N.Y. - The Oneonta State University women's soccer team established an NCAA all-divisions record Wednesday night, beating SUNY Institute of Technology 10-0 for the Red Dragons' 73rd straight conference game without a loss.
The previous mark for consecutive conference games without a loss was set in 2003 by the Wisconsin-Stevens Point women.
The Red Dragons scored their first goal just 42 seconds into the game, when Leslie Small took a pass from Corinne Tisei and scored. Small finished with a school-record four goals.
FSU IMPROVES TO 5-0: The visiting Seminoles women defeated UCF 3-0 and kept their winning streak alive despite wind and rain. Sel Kuralay had her sixth and seven goals, matching FSU's individual high for last season. The Golden Knights (2-3) were outshot 18-7.
BASKETBALL
NEW START FOR EX-HUSKY: Sophomore guard Antonio Kellogg attended his first class at the University of San Francisco on Wednesday, nearly five months after being expelled from Connecticut.
A former high school star in Oakland, Kellogg averaged 3.1 points and 2.3 assists last season as a backup point guard. But the freshman was kicked off the team by UConn coach Jim Calhoun after two arrests in two weeks following a suspension for an undisclosed violation of team rules.
Kellogg will sit out this season under NCAA transfer rules.
GONZAGA: Hank Anderson, Gonzaga's basketball coach for 21 seasons who had the most wins in school history, died at 84. He died Monday in Gig Harbor near Tacoma of an aortic aneurysm, the university said. Mr. Anderson, a former Gonzaga athletic director, had a career mark of 291-275 and a .514 winning percentage.
GEORGIA WOMEN: Forward Rebecca Rowsey will miss the season after tearing up her right knee in a workout. Rowsey, who started all 34 games last season, tore the anterior cruciate ligament last week and had surgery Tuesday. She will redshirt this season. The Bulldogs four other returning starters from a team that reached the region semifinals of the NCAA Tournament.
FOOTBALL
ARKANSAS: Offensive lineman Zac Tubbs will likely miss Saturday's game against Vanderbilt. He is progressing slowly from a right ankle sprain that was sustained Aug. 13.
FAU: The Owls will likely see both of Oklahoma State's quarterbacks on the field at the same time tonight at Dolphins Stadium. The Cowboys' best playmakers are Donovan Woods and Bobby Reid, both QBs, and Reid played receiver for much of last week's victory over Montana State. Reid also was Oklahoma State's leading rusher with 82 yards on six carries while playing quarterback.
MARSHALL: Bernie Morris, who led Marshall to a win over William & Mary in a backup role, was elevated to starting quarterback for the home opener against Kansas State.
OHIO STATE: Sometime before No. 4 Ohio State meets No. 2 Texas on Saturday night, Buckeyes coach Jim Tressel must decide who will be his starting quarterback. A lot of people will be watching closely, reading a lot - maybe too much - into what is behind his decision.
On one hand is Justin Zwick, the steady starter from last week's 34-14 beating of Miami (Ohio). He has a good but not great arm. He is dependable, not spectacular.
On the other hand is Troy Smith, the star of last year's upset of No. 7 Michigan.
"I think you take all things into consideration when you make decisions," Tressel said this week.
Tressel has said he can live with playing two quarterbacks.
"I don't think it really matters if that's something I can live with," Zwick said. "He gets paid the big bucks to make those decisions and we roll with them."
