WORLD WAR II exhibit, Warriors, Navajo Code Talkers, is the current exhibit in the John Murray Davis Gallery at the Old Courthouse Heritage Museum, One Courthouse Square, Inverness. Warriors is comprised of a series of photos of the Navajo U.S. Marines who created a code based on the Navajo language. The code was used to help direct the U.S. military in actions against the Japanese during World War II. Photographer Ken Kawano, whose work is highlighted, will be at the museum Sept. 23. The exhibit will be at the museum through Nov. 15. Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday; 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Call 341-6429. Free admission.
ARTISTS who have enough two- or three-dimensional works for an exhibit are welcome at the Central Florida Community College Citrus County Campus. The college is offering exhibit spaces in September, October, February and March. Stipends are provided. Students and community members with enough work to fill a one-person exhibit are invited to participate. Pedestals are available for sculptures and ceramics. THE LADIES AUXILIARY of the West Citrus Elks is now accepting applications for the annual arts and crafts show to be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 5 at the West Citrus Elks Lodge on W Grover Cleveland Boulevard in Homosassa. DIGITAL CAMERA GROUP, a division of the Citrus County Art League Cultural Center, will begin its second year with a general meeting at 6:45 p.m. Monday at the Art Center in the Arts & Education Building, 2644 N Annapolis Ave., Citrus Hills. The meeting will feature a slide show of the best photos from 2004 of the Florida Professional Photographers Association, presented by Larry Munne, who is a member of the association and the camera group. The meeting also will include information about the group's activities for the year and discussion of changes to the rules for competitions. Upcoming topics will include how to make the most of a digital camera, how to use photo editing software and more. LOOK AHEAD
CALLING ALL CARVERS: The Nature Coast Carving Club meets at noon Mondays at the Crystal River Moose Club and at 1 p.m. Tuesdays at the East Citrus Community Center on State Road 44 E, Inverness. The club also holds a business meeting at 10 a.m. the first Friday of each month at the Lakes Region Library, Druid Road, Inverness. The meeting also features a demonstration.
FREE DANCE will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Sept. 17 at the Crystal River Mall. Activities are planned throughout the afternoon, including dance contests with prizes for the winners and dance exhibitions. COOTERFEST will be Oct. 28 to 30 in Inverness. Festivities include cooter races, a pedal tractor pull, human races, bicycle rides, a barbecue cookoff, a motorcycle run, historical tours, a spooky Cooterween celebration and several other activities. Ben Jones, who played Cooter Davenport on The Dukes of Hazzard television series, will sign autographs Friday and will perform with his band at the Great American Cooter Blast event Saturday. Jones performed at the first festival, with much fanfare. Jones also will bring the General Lee, the show's famous Dixie-playing car.
THE CENTRAL FLORIDA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA will present Symphonic Celebration with pianist Lyle Indergaard at 8 p.m. Oct. 15 and 3 p.m. Oct. 16 in the Central Florida Community College Fine Arts Auditorium.
CITRUS SPRINGS CHORUS resumes rehearsals at 2:30 p.m. Sept. 29 in the Citrus Springs Community Center. New members are welcome on all parts. through the end of October. The chorus will present a holiday concert, including ensembles, full chorus numbers and solos, at 7 p.m. Dec. 12. The chorus hopes to travel to an area skilled nursing facility for its dress rehearsal. This vocal group is open to residents of all communities. There is no audition. The chorus is directed by Nancy Gordon, who has more than 30 years' experience in music education and church music and is co-director of the Citrus Concert Band.
