Contractor selected for $8.5M community center

DUNEDIN - Commissioners awarded an $8.5-million contract Thursday night for construction of the new community center at Pinehurst Road and Michigan Boulevard.

The contract was given to Creative Contractors of Clearwater, which was responsible for Ruth Eckerd Hall and the Clearwater Police Department headquarters. Commissioners had planned to spend $9.5-million on the 45,000-square-foot center, but Creative Contractors said they could do it for less, said Harry Gross, director of leisure services. He said the cost is not expected to increase since workers plan to get started right away. The city has scheduled a groundbreaking ceremony for 10 a.m. Oct. 6. The new center should be completed by Nov. 1, 2006. It will replace the existing 8,000-square-foot center, which has served the community for more than 30 years.
