2 shows are tops at Tommys

Richey Suncoast theatergoers' votes say Love, Sex and the IRS and Honk! were their favorites of the 2004-05 season.

The wacky comedy Love, Sex and the IRS and the whimsical musical Honk!, based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale The Ugly Duckling, were the top winners at the annual Tommy Awards for the 2004-05 season at Richey Suncoast Theatre.

Love, Sex won six awards, including Favorite Show of the Season, and Honk! won seven awards out of the 15 given. The two remaining awards went to Ron McInnis for his performance in the musical High Society and to Kristin Bram for her choreography of Guys and Dolls.

Love, Sex was also distinguished by being the highest grossing show in the history of the theater, "adjusted for inflation," said Charlie Skelton, president of the Richey Suncoast board of directors.

Skelton said that Guys and Dolls may have been hurt by the hurricanes that went through the area during its run, causing low attendance and forcing the theater to cancel performances. The winners of the trophies, named for theater founder and Hollywood actor Thomas Meighan, are chosen by popular vote of the people who attend the shows.

The fifth show of the season, Wife Begins at 40, won no awards.
