Heads up

Minority enterprise events start today

A four-day series of seminars, networking events and awards for Minority Enterprise Development Week begins today in Tampa.

The week, created by a presidential proclamation in 1982, is intended to recognize the significant contributions minority business owners have made to the country's economic development.

The national theme of the week this year is "That Art of the Deal: Making it Happen."

In the Tampa Bay area, volunteers are coordinating events through the Minority Enterprise Development Corp. About 100 to 150 people are expected at a kickoff networking reception at 6 tonight; 200 at an awards banquet Wednesday; and about 50 at various sessions during the week, said Frances Wimberly, an MEDC director.

One highlight Tuesday will be advice from purchasing agents on how to conduct business with government and the private sector.

All events will be at the Clarion Hotel, 5303 W Kennedy Blvd. in Tampa. Other than the awards banquet, there is no charge. For more information, call Wimberly at (813) 274-7923.
