Rate increase request triggers insurance hearing

By JEFF HARRINGTON
Published September 12, 2005

Not every property insurance increase coming down the pike can be blamed on hurricanes and sinkholes.

In a variation on the theme plaguing Florida homeowners, Auto-Owners Insurance Co. has filed for a 20 percent average statewide increase. Not for hurricanes, but for coverage of fires and other direct physical loss.

The size of the filing was enough to trigger a public hearing. Florida's Office of Insurance Regulation will hold a hearing Sept. 22 at the Harborview Center, 300 Cleveland St., Clearwater.
