Dinner, auction to raise money for lung patient

BROOKSVILLE - A fundraiser for David Moen, who underwent lung surgery recently, will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church, 109 S Broad St., Brooksville. Pork or chicken dinners will cost $7, including potato salad, baked beans, 16-ounce cups, Chinet plates (heavy duty), plastic forks and knives and napkins, aluminum foil, carryout trays, bags for carryout meals and paper for tables.

Area merchants are asked to donate items or gift certificates from their businesses for a silent auction. Check donations should be made payable to David Moen and mailed to 420 Ponce de Leon Blvd., Brooksville, FL 34601. Auction items may be dropped off at the same location, or call 796-7120 or 796-0125 for a pickup.

All proceeds will go to the Moen family to help defray medical expenses.

Golf scramble to benefit paralyzed football player

The Springstead High School football team will hold a golf scramble on Sept. 24 to benefit Tom Chiarello, a former Eagle football player who was paralyzed last year during hurricane cleanup. All money raised will go toward buying him a special van for transportation. The event will be held at Spring Hill Golf Course. There will be an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. The cost is $45 per person. For Saturday night, dinner and a murder

SPRING HILL - St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church will present the murder mystery dinner theater Murder at the Class Reunion of St. Cecilia's All-Girl School at 6:30 p.m. Saturday in the parish hall. The production will be professionally performed by the cast of MurderS She Wrote Inc., and a buffet dinner catered by Papa Joe's Italian Restaurant will follow. Sign up now to Run with the Sheriff in October

BROOKSVILLE - It's time to register for the fifth annual Run With the Sheriff 5K Cross Country Challenge, which will be held Oct. 29 at Central High School, 14075 Ken Austin Parkway, Brooksville.

Awards will be given to first-place finishers in the male, female and masters categories and to first-, second- and third-place finishers in each five-year age group from 14 to 75 plus. Souvenir T-shirts will be given to all runners who preregister.

A Kids Fun Run will be held immediately after the 5K, and medals will be awarded to all participants. No advance registration is needed. The event is free.

Final check-in is at 7 a.m., with the race starting promptly at 8. Preregistration is $13; registration on race day is $15. Proceeds from the 5K will help pay for youth programs sponsored by the Sheriff's Youth Education Services. For information, call Deputy Bryan Perugini at 754-6830, ext. 313.

Market on Main Street in Brooksville this weekend

BROOKSVILLE - Brooksville Again will sponsor the monthly Market on Main Street event from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and thereafter on the third Saturday of each month. During event days, the following streets will be closed: Main Street between Broad and Liberty streets and the city parking lot between Main Street and Brooksville Avenue. Tae kwon do classes will instill discipline, respect

The Hernando County Parks & Recreation Department will offer tae kwon do classes to teach self-control, self-defense, discipline and respect. Classes will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Mondays at Delta Woods Park, 3400 Deltona Blvd., Spring Hill; 6:15 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays at Deltona Elementary School, 2055 Deltona Blvd., Spring Hill; 6:15 to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays at West Hernando Middle School, 14325 Ken Austin Parkway, Brooksville; and 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the Community Activity Center, 205 E Fort Dade Ave., Brooksville. Participants must be at least 6 years old. There is no cost for the first lesson; subsequent lessons are $10 for the first month and $20 for additional months. Seminar will teach how to prevent water pollution

SPRING HILL - The Hernando County Extension Service will offer a seminar to show residents how to implement simple pollution prevention actions to enhance the quality of the county's waters. Sportsman's Club to offer class on firearms safety

The Hernando Sportsman's Club will offer a home firearms safety class at 9 a.m. Saturday in the clubhouse. The class, which will last about five hours including range time, will qualify students for application for a carry permit. Class size is limited, and preregistration is required.
