Seminole Elks to accept relief donations

The West Central District Seminole Elks No. 2519 is coordinating relief supplies for victims of Hurricane Katrina.

A semitrailer of supplies will be delivered to an Elks Lodge in Hattiesburg, Miss. Items needed include baby food, formula, clothing, diapers, baby wipes, bottles and toys. All kinds of wrapped nonperishable foods, water and can openers.

First aid items, Tylenol, toothpaste, combs, brushes, personal hygiene products, clothing (all sizes), blankets, air mattresses and pillows. Items can be dropped off at the lodge, 10717 Seminole Blvd. Deadline for collection is Sept. 22. Call 215-4701.

Forum on long-term care set for Oct. 5

Mid and South Pinellas Long-Term Care Ombudsman Council and Florida Silver-Haired Legislature, Area 5, will host a public forum from 1-3 p.m. Oct. 5 at Digital Auditorium, St. Petersburg College Seminole Campus, 9200 113th St. N.

The event will cover issues ranging from long-term care resident privacy and visitation rights to decisionmaking and grievance processes in long-term care settings.

Speakers include state Rep. Frank Farkas, elder advocate and state Long-term care ombudsman Brian Lee and LuAnne Reese, a local nursing home director of planning and advocacy with Bon Secours Maria Manor.

Learn blacksmithing, making paper at village

LARGO - Blacksmithing and making paper from plants are two study programs coming up at Heritage Village.

Ken Straight, the village's volunteer blacksmith, will lead a series of classes on the basic skills of the craft. Classes are 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 17, 24, Oct. 1 and 8.

Fee is $100 for members of the Pinellas County Historical Society, $120 for nonmembers. Registration required. Open to adults only; the classes are limited to five.

Students will learn beginning techniques, safety, lighting and maintaining an efficient coal fire, working the bellows, heating and shaping the metal and designing an ornamental piece.

Papermaker and artist Robert Thompson will lead a workshop about making paper from tropical plants 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 24.

The fee is $23 for society members, $28 for nonmembers, and includes all supplies, printed materials and a take-home kit. Space is limited, registration required.
