TAMPA - It may have tested some nerves, but women's soccer coach Bobby Johnston and his nearly flawless Spartans remain unbeaten after a tight game over the weekend.
Thanks to some late heroics by Tampa's goalkeeper, the Spartans held on Sunday to beat St.Edwards 2-1 in the Spartan Invitational.
Down a goal in the final minute, St.Edwards was awarded a penalty kick. Spartans goalkeeper Shannon Aitken blocked Kristin Gascoyne 's shot with 50 seconds remaining to preserve a Tampa win.
"It was a lot closer than I would have liked, but our keeper came up big," Johnston said. "It (a penalty kick) is still a 50-50 chance. But we definitely have a lot of confidence in (Aitken) to come up big, and she did."
The score was tied at 1 through 88 minutes until Samantha Robinson produced the winner, her second goal of the game and fourth of the year. Her first score came in the ninth minute.
Tampa (5-0-1) didn't allow a shot in the first half, and St.Edwards' goal was the first allowed by Tampa this season.
