Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Young 'Canes keep fast start in perspective

The dream season continues for Citrus, which has a 5-0 record.

A victory in a tri match over South Sumter and The Villages has the Hurricanes in excellent shape.

"It is great being undefeated, but golf is a crazy game," coach Michelle Connor said. "One day you're steak. The next, chopped liver."

A key has been the way the 'Canes came together from the start.

"This group has jelled," Connor said. "I am the lucky one to have the opportunity to have them on my team."

It is a young squad.

Briana Carlson , the team's No.1 player, and Ashton Connor and Lauren Bomke are freshmen. Jordan Connor is only a sophomore.

"I am really happy with the play of my freshmen girls," Michelle Connor said. "They've really stepped up to the plate, and it is obvious that they have put in the work over the summer."

Citrus entered the week with two tri matches. It was scheduled to play Hernando and Central on Tuesday, and the Hurricanes meet South Sumter and Hernando on Thursday.

WANTING CONSISTENCY: Lecanto has won four consecutive matches since losing its season opener to Citrus.

The Panthers had easy victories over district rivals Ocala Forest and Ocala Vanguard this past week, with Carly Lewis and Kari Amundson each taking medalist honors in one match. Last season, Lecanto lost to Vanguard by one stroke in their district tournament but rebounded with a seven-stroke win against the Knights in the regional.

"We are just trying to get our scores down," coach Doug Warren said. "If we could all put together average scores at one time, it would really give some indication of our potential."

A big match for Lecanto is scheduled Sept.22 against Citrus at Seven Rivers County Club.

DIAMOND IN ROUGH: Junior Andrea Adams has been a bright spot for Crystal River (1-3). She has received medalist honors in each match. Adams followed an impressive round of 39 against Lecanto by duplicating the score against Ocala Trinity Catholic.

Adams "has done an excellent job for us," coach Jere DeFoor said of his two-time regional qualifier.

Crystal River was to face Nature Coast on Tuesday and is involved in a quad with Citrus, South Sumter and Hernando on Thursday.
