Positions open on county fine arts, library panels

BROOKSVILLE - The Hernando County Board of County Commissioners has an opening for two unexpired terms on the Fine Arts Council. One term will expire on Dec. 31, 2006 and the other will expire on Dec. 31, 2008. The Council's purpose is to promote the arts and to support groups associated with the arts in Hernando County.
There also is an opening for an unexpired term on the Library Advisory Committee. Committee members act as an advisory body on matters pertaining to the county's public library system. The term will expire on Dec. 31, 2008.
Applications for all three positions are available in the County Administrator's Office, Room 461, 20 N Main St., Brooksville and must be returned before 5 p.m. Sept. 30. The openings are voluntary and unpaid positions.
Withlacoochee council meets with full agenda
OCALA - The Withlacoochee Regional Planning Council will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at the council office, 1241 SW 10th St., Ocala. The agenda will include an overview of the Marion County water supply plan, transportation consultant contracts, insurance renewal, health insurance administrative fee, and contracts for professional services, janitorial and attorney.
City seeks nominees for Great Brooksvillian award
BROOKSVILLE - As part of Brooksville's Founders Week Celebration, Oct. 15 through Oct. 22, the city is accepting nominations for the title of Great Brooksvillian.
Applicants will be recognized as outstanding men and women who have made significant contributions to the history, culture and/or economy of the community. After making their selections, City Council members will honor these men and women at a ceremony Oct. 17.
A plaque will be maintained in City Hall to commemorate and memorialize each year's honoree, and an individual plaque will be presented to the families of those honored.

Christmas festival needs holiday craft vendors

Festival singers holding rehearsals for new season
WEEKI WACHEE - The Nature Coast Festival Singers began fall rehearsals this week. Rehearsals will be held 7 p.m. each Monday at Nativity Lutheran Church, 6363 Commercial Way, Weeki Wachee. There will be music for purchase before each rehearsal and singers in all four parts are welcome. Parks department offers fitness, tennis programs
The Hernando County Department of Parks & Recreation will offer a Walk Fit program in which residents can walk, jog or run at their own pace and on their on schedule. Sessions will be held each Monday, Tuesday and Thursday at Ernie Wever Youth Park, 205 E Fort Dade Ave., Brooksville; Monday through Friday at Delta Woods Park, 3400 Deltona Blvd., Spring Hill, and at Veteran's Memorial Park, 12254 Spring Hill Drive, Spring Hill. Extension service to hold aspiring farmers classes
LECANTO - So you want to be a farmer? The Hernando County Cooperative Extension Service will offer two free classes at 7 p.m. Monday and Sept. 22 to discuss options available for small farmers in Hernando County and talk about how to avoid pitfalls and succeed and live a rural lifestyle. Builders association gears up for fishing tournament
HERNANDO BEACH - The ninth annual Hernando Builders Association Fishing Tournament will be held from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct 1 and 2 at the Gulf Coast Marina at Hernando Beach Public Boat Ramp.
A mandatory captains meeting will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 30 at the Palace Grand, 275 Della Court, off Commercial Way in Spring Hill.
Entry fee is $65 per angler and includes a tournament T-shirt, a ticket to the Captains/Anglers meeting party and one ticket to the fish fry awards night. The deadline to enter is Sept. 26.
Checkout will be held at 7 a.m. each day at four different locations: Hernando Beach channel marker 80, Bayport Boat Ramp, Homosassa River and Hudson Channel.

Boat ramp, fishing pier reopened at Lake Townsen

Yacht club prepares for upcoming seafood festival
HERNANDO BEACH - The 22nd annual Hernando Beach Yacht Club's Seafood Festival will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 8 and 9, at the clubhouse, 4163 Shoal Line Blvd.
There will be craft and food booths, as well as live music provided by the Dixie Highway Band. Craft booths for one day are $35, or $50 for both days. Food booths are $250 for both days.

UF food institute to give certification course
BROOKSVILLE - The University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences Extension will offer a Food Managers Certification class from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 27, at the Cooperative Extension Service, 19490 Oliver St.
Certification is required in Florida for food managers of all establishments licensed by the Department of Business and Professional Regulation, the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and selected licensees of the Department of Health.
Following the training, the exam will be given. The cost for training and testing is $75; the cost for training, testing and a manual is $115. No exam only option or walk-ins. The registration deadline is Sept. 20.

UF extension to offer lawn care, landscape training
BROOKSVILLE - The University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences Extension will conduct its training series, Lawn and Landscape Expert Training, beginning Oct. 6 and continuing every Thursday through Oct. 27, at the extension office, 19490 Oliver St.
Classes will be held from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Attendance to all four classes is required to receive a certificate.
In this four-class series, participants will gain practical knowledge about proper care for their landscape by learning about insects, pesticides, pruning, fertilization, lawn care and citrus.
A $20 fee covers the cost of course materials and refreshments. Space is limited. Registration is required. The deadline to register is Sept. 29. To reserve a seat, call 754-4433.

Oncology expert to speak about prostate cancer
SPRING HILL - Oak Hill Hospital will conduct its popular community education series, Prostate Cancer from A to Z, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Sept. 28, 11375 Cortez Blvd., in the fourth floor classroom of the Hernando Medical Center adjacent to the hospital, entrance C.
Dr. Larry Gandle will speak. He is board certified in radiation oncology. He is a member of the American College of Radiology, the Radiologic Society of North America, and the American Society of Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology.
