Gooden pleads not guilty to reckless driving charge

TAMPA - Three weeks after Dwight Gooden reportedly sped away from a police officer who said he had been driving erratically, the former Yankees pitcher contends he did nothing wrong.

Gooden was to be arraigned Tuesday in Tampa on a charge of reckless driving before Hillsborough Circuit Judge William Fuente, but Gooden's attorney sent a written plea of not guilty.

Gooden, 41, turned himself in Aug. 25, three days after the incident.

Child is kidnapped after uncle leaves car running

TAMPA - A 3-year-old girl in the care of her uncle was kidnapped Monday night, after her uncle left her alone inside a running Pontiac while he went into a Tampa gas station. The girl was returned to the gas station a short time later, but Tampa police were still looking Tuesday for the abductor and the blue 1979 Pontiac.

Donald Jenkins, 21, of 1614 Northbay St. in Tampa, went inside the Marathon gas station at 3401 E Hillsborough Ave. at 10:11 p.m., police said.

A man jumped into the running car and drove off, heading east on Hillsborough, according to a police report. Jenkins saw the car leaving the station and got friends to help him search the surrounding area for the Pontiac, police said.

While Jenkins was out looking, a man walked up to the gas station with the girl, Durkin said. He left her with the clerk and walked away.
