Seminole Elks to accept relief donations

The West Central District Seminole Elks No. 2519 is coordinating relief supplies for victims of Hurricane Katrina. A semitrailer of supplies will be delivered to an Elks Lodge in Hattiesburg, Miss.

Items needed include baby food, formula, clothing, diapers, baby wipes, bottles and toys. All kinds of wrapped nonperishable foods, water and can openers. First aid items, Tylenol, toothpaste, combs, brushes, personal hygiene products, clothing (all sizes), blankets, air mattresses and pillows. Items can be dropped off at the lodge, 10717 Seminole Blvd. Deadline for collection is Sept. 22. Call 215-4701.

Forum on long-term care scheduled for Oct. 5

Mid and South Pinellas Long-Term Care Ombudsman Council and Florida Silver-Haired Legislature, Area 5, will host a public forum from 1-3 p.m. Oct. 5 at Digital Auditorium, St. Petersburg College Seminole Campus, 9200 113th St. N. The event will cover issues ranging from long-term care resident privacy and visitation rights to decisionmaking and grievance processes in long-term care settings. Speakers include state Rep. Frank Farkas, elder advocate and state Long-term care ombudsman Brian Lee and LuAnne Reese, a local nursing home director of planning and advocacy with Bon Secours Maria Manor. Learn blacksmithing, making paper at village

LARGO - Blacksmithing and making paper from plants are two study programs coming up at Heritage Village.

Ken Straight, the village's volunteer blacksmith, will lead a series of classes on the basic skills of the craft. Classes are 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 17, 24, Oct. 1 and 8. Fee is $100 for members of the Pinellas County Historical Society, $120 for nonmembers. Registration required. Open to adults only; the classes are limited to five.

Students will learn beginning techniques, safety, lighting and maintaining an efficient coal fire, working the bellows, heating and shaping the metal and designing an ornamental piece.

Papermaker and artist Robert Thompson will lead a workshop about making paper from tropical plants 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 24. The fee is $23 for society members, $28 for nonmembers, and includes all supplies, printed materials and a take-home kit. Space is limited, registration required.

Donate used cell phones for seniors' emergency use

Unused cell phones can be lifesavers for seniors. The Area Agency on Aging of Pasco-Pinellas, Inc. and its Senior Victim Advocate Program are collecting used cell phones to distribute as 9-1-1 emergency or "Safety Phones" to seniors who are at risk. The cell phones are free to seniors and can only be used to access 9-1-1 in case of an emergency.

The agency has added two more distribution and collection sites for the Senior Safety Phone Project in Pinellas County, the Mainlands on U.S. 19 and Mainlands Boulevard in Pinellas Park, 217-0967, and the Senior Resource and Referral Center at 1281 Court St. in Clearwater, 442-7772. Transit committee has several openings

The Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority has several openings on its Transit Advisory Committee. This group meets once a month at its headquarters at 14840 49th St. in Clearwater.

The committee of transit users and interested citizens provide input to the PSTA board of directors and staff regarding transit service, fares and infrastructure improvements.

Such input is intended to increase ridership and improve service for passengers. To apply, call 533-4301.

Largo Parks Department looking for vendors

The Largo Recreation Parks & Arts Department is recruiting vendors for its October Bluegrass Strings and Crafty Things, 10 a.m to 5 p.m. Oct. 1-2, in Largo Central Park.

Miracle on Wheels offers power wheelchairs

Miracle on Wheels makes available electric power wheelchairs to nonambulatory people 65 years or older and the permanently disabled of any age if they qualify. Those who qualify must be able to operate a joystick controller on the armrest and understand the basic instructions. Call 1-800-749-8778.

Bayside Choir slates auditions

Bayside Choir, a community nonprofit arts organization, is holding auditions at the Piano Company, 1710 N Hercules, Suite 112, Clearwater.

U.S. Submarine Veterans seeks members

U.S. Submarine Veterans is seeking to expand membership for all local sub vets. The Tang Base, a chapter of U.S. Submarine Veterans, is made up of Navy veterans and active duty personnel who are qualified in submarines.
