Times critic lauded

By Times Staff Writer
Published September 14, 2005

St. Petersburg Times food critic Chris Sherman was honored Saturday in the annual competition of the Association of Food Journalists.

Sherman took second place in restaurant criticism among papers with 150,000 to 350,000 circulation. Jonathan Gold of the LA Weekly was first, and Nancy Leson of the Seattle Times placed third.

He was honored for a selection of restaurant reviews published in the Thursday Weekend section in 2004. Sherman, 58, has been a restaurant critic and food writer at the St. Petersburg Times since 1989. He is the author of The Buzz on Wine (Lebhar-Friedman Books, 2000).

Last year, Sherman took second place in column writing for a variety of pieces on wine. His column, Uncorked, is published every other week on the Cork & Bottle page in Taste.

The association honored food journalism in newspapers, magazines and online at its annual conference, this year in San Francisco. Judges were journalists and other food professionals from around the United States.

The only other Florida winner was the Miami Herald, which won second place for best section in the same circulation category. For a list of winners, go to www.afjonline.com
