Hot Tickets: You say it's your birthday!

Published September 15, 2005

So you couldn't get into the Paul McCartney show at the Times Forum, huh? Well, don't sweat it, music fans: You still have a rocking alternative Saturday night.

WMNF-FM 88.5 is throwing its 26th Birthday Bash at the historic Coliseum in St. Petersburg. WMNF is a "noncommercial community radio station that celebrates local cultural diversity and is committed to equality, peace and social and economic justice." See, now you have to go! It's your civic duty!

The night's entertainment will be provided by two bands with through-the-roof hipster quotients, not to mention the ability to make you dance until your Chuck Taylors melt: Venezuela's Los Amigos Invisibles, who mix Latin grooves with wicked guitar licks, and Gravy, a jam band with an oddball brass section called the Mighty Horns of Love. Let's see McCartney play the trombone, dance and wear a wrestling mask all at the same time.

The WMNF 26th Birthday Bash kicks off at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Coliseum, 535 Fourth Ave. N., St. Petersburg. $22-$25. (813) 238-8001.

Those who can, do; those who teach, can do too

The McCormick Duo has cultivated Florida composers to write for its somewhat specialized combination of flute and percussion. And this weekend's concert features music by at least two composers from the state, Robert Constable of Tampa and Howard Buss of Lakeland. Also on the program are works by Bach, Piazzolla and Garreth Farr.

The duo is made up of the husband-wife team of Robert and Kim McCormick. He's a music professor at the University of South Florida and previously served for 20 years as principal percussionist with the Florida Orchestra. Kim McCormick, one-time principal flute of the Charleston Symphony, also is on the USF music faculty.

The McCormicks perform at 4 p.m. Sunday in the Music Recital Hall on USF's Tampa campus. $4, $8. 813 974-2323;
