Four weeks into the fall prep season, bowlers are displaying mid-season form.
Northeast leads the Pinellas County High School League boys scratch competition with 65 points, two better than Boca Ciega. Osceola, led by Matt Corsetti, is in third at 61. Corsetti is the leader in average, rolling at a 220.39 clip. He has produced 11 points, the most among the boys. Justin Fecke of Palm Harbor University has a 206 average and nine points.
Tarpon Springs (59) leads handicap play by three points over Boca Ciega. The Pirates' Tom Nahon and David Segler posted the top series and game scores, respectively, last week.
For the girls, Seminole heads the scratch competition with 77 points. Behind Ciera Negretti, Ashley Goyette, Alex Gauthier and Heather Jansen, the Warhawks lead Northeast by eight points.
Ashly Galante averages a league-high 207.39 for Tarpon Springs. She has recorded the best game score (267) and series (708). Lakewood maintains a two-point edge on Countryside in handicap action.
Pinellas Park No. 2 is in control of the junior varsity standings with 69 points. Lakewood trails by 12.
SCHENKEL REMEMBERED: USBC Hall of Famer Chris Schenkel of Leesburg, Ind., among the nation's most popular and widely honored sports announcers, died Sept. 11. He was 82.
Schenkel was the announcer for ABC-TV's Pro Bowlers Tour telecasts from 1962 until they were discontinued in 1997. Also a member of the PBA Hall of Fame, Schenkel covered virtually every major sporting event in more than 60 years as a broadcaster but was most closely associated with his commentary in bowling.
Schenkel, whose career brought him in contact with the all-time greats from nearly every sport, singled out his American Bowling Congress Hall of Fame induction in 1988 as perhaps the highest recognition he achieved.
"I'm flabbergasted," he said during the induction speech. "I've been honored similarly by the Professional Bowlers Association, and now this from the amateur arm of bowling. Where do I go from here?"
Schenkel always said, "The nicest athletes I've ever been around are bowlers."
NABI: Les Foerster of St. Petersburg finished second and received $100 at Club 570 last weekend at Countryside Lanes. Foerster averaged 169 and lost 242-210 in the final to Tampa's Chris O'Neal. For information about the organization, go online to centralflorida.bowlnabi.com.
COMING UP: Ten Pins in South Pasadena and Twedt's of Largo are playing host to fund-raisers for Hurricane Katrina victims on Sunday.
Both centers are owned by Bobbie Stealy, a longtime local fund-raiser.
The games, 8-pin no-tap, will begin at 1 p.m. The entry fee is $20, and all proceeds will be donated.
The next Scotch Doubles tournament at Dunedin Lanes is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Oct. 1. For information, go online to dunedinlanes.com.
The Jim "Sully" Sullivan Wheelchair League will meet at 1:30 p.m. on Sept. 26 at Liberty Lanes to organize its 26th year in Pinellas County.
It is a USBC-sanctioned league, with wheelchair and able-bodied bowlers on doubles teams. Competition will start Oct. 3.
