NEW PORT RICHEY - The city Police Department has won first place in a statewide competition that recognizes agencies for their traffic safety initiatives.
The Florida Law Enforcement Challenge targets three major traffic safety priorities: occupant protection, impaired driving and speeding. New Port Richey police won in the category of agencies having from 21 to 40 officers.
For its victory, the department will receive a changeable message sign trailer and a radar speed display trailer. Also, just by participating, agencies receive a laser speed detector.
The win also qualifies the agency to draw for the grand prize, a fully equipped 2006 Ford F-250 pickup, which will be given away later this year in a random drawing among the first-place winners.
In a news release about the award, New Port Richey police said city traffic crashes were reduced from 818 in 2003 to 719 in 2004. Alcohol-related crashes were reduced from 14.77 percent of all crashes to 10.09 percent. And driving-under-the-influence arrests increased from 111 in 2003, to 134 in 2004.
The Florida Law Enforcement Challenge is coordinated by the Buckle Up Florida program and funded by the Florida Department of Transportation.
