TAMPA - Andrew C. Rodgers, who served as a vice president and chief financial officer for the fledgling University of South Florida, has died at 83.

Mr. Rodgers, who joined the founding faculty in 1959 to begin a career of about a dozen years, died Wednesday (Sept. 14, 2005) at a Tampa nursing home.

A dialysis patient, he died of renal failure, said Dr. Walter Afield, a friend and retired chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at USF College of Medicine.

After leaving the university, Mr. Rodgers, who lived in Belleair Beach, did consulting work that included such clients as former Gov. Lawton Chiles and the state Board of Regents, Afield said.

"He really should have been a president of a university," Afield said. "He knew all about the money."

The eldest of eight children, Mr. Rodgers was born in Georgia and grew up in Bunnell. He was a graduate of the University of Florida.

He was a World War II Army veteran and received the Bronze Star, his family said.

Henderson Boulevard Chapel of Marsicano-B. Marion Reed Stowers Funeral Homes is in charge.

Information from Times files was used in this obituary.
