FSU women beat UF 4-2

GAINESVILLE - Florida State's Holly Peltzer picked a pretty good time to score her first career goal, not to mention her second.

With 13:04 left against Florida, Peltzer notched the deciding goal in a 4-2 victory in front of 3,249 at James G. Pressly Stadium.

"It was awesome. It was big time," Peltzer said. "I wanted to come in off the bench and (make) a big impact, and I did."

Peltzer didn't play the first half, but notched FSU's third and fourth goals.

The four goals were the most FSU has scored against UF.

"It was really one of the most exciting matches I can remember being played here," UF coach Becky Burleigh said. "It was like a playoff game, that's what it felt like, a playoff game."

FSU hadn't given up a goal in 370:19 before the game, while UF had held opponents scoreless for 284:48.

UF's Melanie Booth, fresh off an SEC Defensive Player of the Week honor, made it 1-0 at 12:06 from about 10 yards out on a solo run.

"We scored, they would answer, we scored, they would answer, then they got two at the end," Burleigh said.

FSU forward Sel Kuralay struck next, hitting a slow roller that seemed to have caught Jen Gardner off guard. She got off to a slow start to her left, and by time she dove, the ball had already crossed the goal line.

Kuralay scored her next goal from about 25 yards out. Gardner leaped, but the ball still sailed over her outstretched arms and into the top of the net.

FSU's fourth goal was also a long shot.

"You can't get beat from 40," Burleigh said. "That's a tough goal to give up and there were two of them that were like that."

UF's Rie Sawai got her first goal, at 29:10 in the first half.

USF WINS BIG EAST OPENER: Trailing 2-0 with five minutes left, the host Bulls men defeated Seton Hall 3-2 in overtime in the school's first Big East game. Midfielder Sammy Castellanos scored the winner in the 92nd minute. Rodrigo Hidalgo scored the tying goal and had assists on the other goals. Kris Raad also scored. Also, the USF women lost their Big East opener, 4-1 at Marquette.

ENNA LEADS TAMPA: Luke Enna scored twice and the host Spartans defeated Thomas University 3-0. Gregory Guerrero also scored.

SAINT LEO TIES, LOSES: The Lions women tied Montevallo 1-1 as midfielder Jennifer O'Connor scored an unassisted goal. The men lost to Rollins 2-0 in the conference opener for both.

CLEMSON: The Tigers will face Vanderbilt in 2012 and 2013, and moved a 2009 game with Pittsburgh to 2010. The Panthers will play at Death Valley in 2011. LSU: The school settled a lawsuit from one of two former instructors who said they were pressured to change players' grades and hide academic misconduct several years ago. The school denied wrongdoing, and said in a news release it settled to avoid the expense of further litigation by Tiffany Terrell Mayne.

CLEMSON WOMEN: Point guard Reggie Maddox, last season's leading scorer, will miss this season to concentrate on academics.

GATORS WIN: Outside hitter Jane Collymore had 14 kills and host Florida defeated IPFW 30-14, 30-17 and 30-19. It was the Gators' 228th win in a row against unranked opponents.

USF STOPS UCF: Kristina Fabris had a match-high 22 kills as the host Bulls won 30-19, 33-35, 30-19 and 30-23.

SAINT LEO WINS: The host Lions defeated Florida Tech 30-28, 30-26 and 30-18 in the Sunshine State Conference opener for both. Freshman Jessica Lynn of Brandon had 28 assists.

KONCZAL STARS: Rachelle Konczal of Northeast High had a season-high 19 kills as host Florida Southern defeated Palm Beach Atlantic 30-20, 30-24 and 30-21.
