Citizen sponsored referendums

By Times Staff Writer
Published September 18, 2005

Here are just some of the hurdles a citizen-sponsored referendum must vault before Indian Rocks Beach voters can say "yes" or "no" at the ballot box:

- A minimum of 451 signatures from verified registered voters in the city.

- Creation of a formal ordinance for consideration by the City Commission within 60 days (approval not required for referendum election).

- Presentation of the referendum ballot language to the supervisor of elections.

- Actual election to be held no more than one year after filing with the city clerk.

- If approved by voters, referendum becomes city law.
