Bright House says HD subscriptions are soaring

By DAVE GUSSOW

High-definition TV continues to make inroads with viewers in the Tampa Bay region.

Bright House Networks, the dominant cable company in the area, reported that 85,000 subscribers get HDTV, about 8 percent of its customer base. That's up from 50,000 a year ago and 20,000 two years ago.

In addition, 17,000 subscribers pay $6.95 a month for the HD Digital Video Recorder so they can, in the jargon of the day, "time-shift" watching favorite shows.

HDTV offers a sharper, more vivid picture and has been particularly popular for sports and movies. Prices for sets have fallen dramatically in recent years, with some sets starting at about $500. That's a far cry from the late 1990s, when sets could cost $10,000 or more.

The popularity also is reflected in reports from the Consumer Electronics Association, which predicts that sales of digital sets could surpass analog sets for the first time this year, at least a year ahead of previous estimates.
