Golf event to benefit former football player

The Springstead High School football team will hold a golf scramble on Saturday to benefit Tom Chiarello, a former Eagle football player who was paralyzed last year during hurricane cleanup. All money raised goes toward buying him a special van for transportation. The event will be held at Spring Hill Golf Course. There will be an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start. The cost is $45 per person. Arts group gets stylish for classical elegance event
BROOKSVILLE - The Hernando County Fine Arts Council will offer its sixth annual classical elegance event at 6 p.m. Oct. 21 at Silverthorn Country Club, 4550 Gulf Club Lane, off Barclay. This year's program will feature the University of South Florida Chamber Singers, a choral ensemble. A social hour will be followed by a sit-down dinner with a choice of filet mignon Oscar, crab-stuffed grouper or a vegetarian entree.

United Communities hosts flood insurance speaker
SPRING HILL - United Communities of Hernando County will meet at 7 p.m. Sept. 26 in the fourth-floor conference room in the Medical Office Building at Oak Hill Hospital 11375 Cortez Blvd. The guest speaker will be Gene Altman, who will talk about the remapping of Hernando County's flood insurance rate maps, which affect all Hernando County residents.
In addition, there will be an open discussion of issues affecting homeowners associations in Hernando County. Everyone is welcome. For information, call John Bloom at 686-1851.
County offers positions on library and fine arts panels
BROOKSVILLE - The Hernando County Board of Commissioners has three voluntary nonsalaried vacancies. The Hernando County Library Advisory Committee has a vacancy for an unexpired term until Dec. 31, 2008. The committee acts as an advisory body to the County Commission.
There are two vacancies for unexpired terms on the Fine Arts Council until Dec. 31, 2008. The council's role is to promote the arts and to support groups associated with the arts in Hernando County. Applicants must be residents and registered voters of Hernando County.
Applications for all three positions are available in the County Administrator's Office, 20 N Main St. or call 754-4002. All applications must be completed and returned before 5 p.m. Sept. 30.
Church's arts, crafts event comes into twelfth year
BROOKSVILLE - Christ Lutheran Church, 475 North Ave. West, will have its 12th annual Sonshine Arts and Crafts Festival from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 5. Sponsored by the Mary Martha Guild of Christ Lutheran, the event will include handmade and bakery items, in addition to soup and sandwiches served throughout the day, along with unlimited coffee for crafters.

Church of Christ to hold rummage sale, flea market
SPRING HILL - Spring Hill United Church of Christ, 4244 Mariner Blvd., will have its semiannual rummage sale inside the fellowship hall from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Oct. 7 and from 8 to 11 a.m. Oct. 8. Chorus to perform for those hungry for harmony

Car seat safety class available at center
BROOKSVILLE - A Woman's Resource Center, 134 E Fort Dade Ave., will conduct a car seat safety class at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 6. There will be discussions on what Florida law says about car seats; the correct installation of infant/toddler and booster seats; the best place in the car for your child; and techniques to get your child to participate in seat belt safety.

State forest friends seek entries for photo contest
The Withlacoochee chapter of the Friends of Florida's State Forests will conduct a photo contest for all area photographers to celebrate the wonders and beauty of the Withlacoochee State Forest.
Entries must feature scenes from the Withlacoochee State Forest or Seminole State Forest. There are two categories: people in the outdoors and nature photography. The youth category includes anyone 18 and younger; the adult category includes those 18 and older. The deadline for entries is Sept. 30. For information and entry forms, call 754-6896.
Oktoberfest will support Sheriffs Youth Ranches
SPRING HILL - AAA Auto Club South will sponsor the 3rd Annual Oktoberfest to support the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 7 at the West Hernando plaza, 1410 Pinehurst Drive.
Enjoy food, entertainment and vendors and donate blood at the LifeSouth Bloodmobile. Learn about CPR, visit the fingerprinting booth and check out the Sea World Shamu car.

Donations still accepted for annual flea market
SPRING HILL - VFW Post 10209 Ladies Auxiliary, 15166 Spring Hill Drive, will have its annual flea market Oct. 8. Doors open at 8 a.m. with doughnuts and coffee for sale. Hot dogs and sodas will go on sale later, and also home baked goods. Table rentals are $10 for one, $15 for two.

Start thinking of ideas for holiday tree trimming
BROOKSVILLE - The Brooksville Woman's Club and St. Anthony Catholic Church will sponsor the annual Festival of Trees from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Dec. 2 and from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 3 at the church, 20428 Cortez Blvd. Decorated trees will be judged. Fundraising events will help buy van, build shelter
SPRING HILL - The Greater Hernando County Chamber of Commerce Leadership Hernando program will present two events to raise money for a van for Jericho Road Ministries and to build a homeless shelter in Hernando County for women and children.
The first will be a local talent showcase from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Oct. 1 at Stage West Community Playhouse, 8390 Forest Oaks Blvd., featuring John Leggio's Center for the Performing Arts, the SunCoast School of the Arts, members of Suzuki Strings and students of Chocachatti Elementary School.
The second event will be the Silvertones, professional lip synchronization entertainers, and the Hernando Harmonizers, 7 to 9:30 p.m. Oct. 29 at Stage West. For information, call Joanne Landry at 585-2323.
Hundreds of plants of many varieties for sale
BROOKSVILLE - The Hernando County Master Gardeners will hold its fall plant sale from 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 1 at the Hernando County Cooperative Extension Service office, 19490 Oliver St.
There will be hundreds of plants including trees, shrubs, ferns, ground covers and perennials. Sale proceeds will be used to maintain and grow the gardening program. For information, call 754-4433.
