TAMPA - Mayor Pam Iorio hosted a public meeting Tuesday to collect ideas for a 2.5-mile downtown riverwalk she hopes to complete in time for the 2009 Super Bowl.
The proposal, talked about since the mid 1970s, is a top priority for Iorio.
"I want to make sure when I leave office it's connected from the Channel District to Tampa Heights," she told about 100 people at the meeting, held in the city's Convention Center.
The project's biggest challenges include getting past bridges that cross the river and security around the Port of Tampa, said Donald Shockey, a project manager with the riverwalk's designer, EDAW Inc.
Meeting attendees were invited to rank the importance of such elements as public art, fountains, cafes, skating areas and flower gardens.
Tampa Museum of Art board member Joan Jennewein said she was glad the mayor was pressing for the riverwalk. "It's going to be an exciting project," she said after the meeting, adding that she hoped a new art museum would have a prominent place along the walkway.
Next, EDAW will bring the city some design options that incorporate some of the ideas gathered Tuesday.
