Party chairwoman not sure she'll quit

TAMPA - A day after resigning, the leader of the Hillsborough County Democratic Party says she might not quit after all.

"It's about me deciding, do I move on," said Janee Murphy, Hillsborough Democratic executive committee chairwoman. "If this party locally feels that it needs me right now, and I am not going to hurt this party, then I am going to stick around to do what I can to help them."

Murphy resigned suddenly during Monday's committee meeting where accusations against her were being reviewed by committee members and later thrown out. The executive committee voted nearly unanimously to reject her resignation.

After the committee rejected her resignation, it tried to remove vice chairman Bob Keenan. In July, he sent state Democratic Party chairwoman Karen Thurman a letter alleging that Murphy was responsible for financial improprieties. The Hillsborough executive committee's credentialing committee cleared her of those charges Monday.

The vote to oust Keenan carried no weight, because committee bylaws require 10 days' notice before someone is voted out.

Members then voted to urge him to resign. He refused.

Keenan could not be reached Tuesday.
