Group recommends Williams

ST. PETERSBURG - A voter education group specializing in issues affecting African-Americans has recommended incumbent Earnest Williams in Tuesday's District 6 City Council primary election.

The African-American Voter Education and Research Committee decided to recommend Williams after a candidate's forum last week, said AAVREC vice chairman Abdul Karim Ali.

An AAVREC panel made the selection.

The group selected Williams because "we think his experience can probably work a little better with the City Council," Ali said.

"We were impressed with all of them," he added.

Other District 6 candidates include Darden Rice, Maria Scruggs-Weston, Dwight "Chimurenga" Waller and Cassandra Wooten-Jackson.

Waller has filed a voting rights suit in federal court, saying the city's at-large election system discriminates against African-American voters. He also seeks to block the Nov. 8 general election.

A forum to discuss the suit and the issues that led to it is at 6:30 tonight at the Enoch Davis Center, 1111 18th Ave. S. Speakers include Waller and lawyer Richard Hurley.
