Theater renovation costs rise $1.4M

The City Council also approves an earlier opening date for Mahaffey Theater.

ST. PETERSBURG - Unforeseen construction costs have inflated the price tag of renovating the Mahaffey Theater by $1.4-million.

The City Council voted 5-0 Tuesday to approve the expenditure, which brings the total budget for improving the theater to $15-million. Council members Earnest Williams, Bill Foster and Rene Flowers were not present.

Capital improvements director John Green said workers have completed demolition of the adjacent Bayfront Center Arena and found several problems that weren't apparent from blueprints, such as severed joists that needed repair.

Green said it took about six weeks for workers to correct the problems, which cost money for labor and parts.

"This is very typical in a major renovation project like this," Green said.

The council also approved an accelerated construction schedule that will allow the theater to open March 1.

Council members approved the renovation last year after architects found extensive water damage to both the interior and exterior of the building. In addition to fixing damage, the theater's lobby will be expanded.
