RICH GET RICHER: There typically are some nice perks offered to PGA Tour players to induce them to enter an event. Schedule and golf course usually are the main criteria, but once in awhile the added incentives can make a difference. Last week's 84 Lumber Classic did not hold back. Last year, the tournament offered roundtrip airfare on a chartered jet to any participant playing in Ireland the following week - with space for spouse, family members and caddies. This year, according to GolfWorld, it took care of defending champion Vijay Singh by picking him up at the airport in a chauffeur-driven Rolls Royce. He then was given the choice of either the Champions Suite at Falling Rock or the Presidential Suite at Cheateau Lafayette, both of which came with 24-hour butler service and his-and-her embroidered robes. All this for a guy who would have been there regardless.
SOME WEEK OF GOLF: The St. Andrews Golf Week has been taking place since 1971 and it is some trip - if you don't mind forking over some serious money. The 2006 dates are April 23-29, with room for 80 golfers, and all the golf is played in St. Andrews, Scotland, the home of golf. One of five rounds is to be played at the Old Course, site of the British Open this year. The other rounds are scheduled for the New Course, the Jubilee, the Eden and the Dukes. Hotel accommodations for six nights, breakfast and dinner daily, instruction and a prize dinner are included. Prices start at approximately $2,500 per person, depending on a hotel choice - and that doesn't include airfare. For information, visit www.linksgolfstandrews.com
QUOTABLE
"What made it easier is the putt was so hard. I had to go up and down two elephants and over a windmill. It worked out, luckily." - Jason Gore, on the 91-foot putt he faced on the final green of the 84 Lumber Classic. He was able to knock it to 2 feet and secure a one-stroke victory with his par putt.
STAT OF THE WEEK
In three previous Presidents Cup appearances, Tiger Woods is 0-6 in fourball (best-ball) competition.
