6 seniors advance in quest for Merit Scholarships

BRANDON - Six area high school seniors have been named semifinalists in the 2006 National Merit Scholarship competition.

The students are Monika Perry and Jean Wilson-Stayton of Brandon High School and Jacqueline Fenton, Mark McShera, Alec Schwartz and Bradley Whitaker of Valrico High School.

As semifinalists, they may continue in the competition for a $2,500 Merit Scholarship award to be announced next spring.

More than a million juniors entered the program by taking the preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

To become a finalist, semifinalists must have an outstanding academic record throughout the high school years, be recommended by the school principal, and earn SAT scores that confirm the student's qualifying marks.

They must also write an essay and provide information about their leadership roles in school and the community.

Ordinarily about 90 percent of the semifinalists become finalists, and about half of the finalists win Merit Scholarships.

The awards will be announced beginning in April.
