Young scholars make the semifinal cut

Several local high school seniors have been named semifinalists in the 2006 National Merit Scholarship Program.
About 16,000 students nationwide qualified as semifinalists based on their performance on the 2004 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. They represent the top 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors.
To become a finalist, a semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record, a recommendation from the high school principal and SAT scores that confirm the PSAT score. About 15,000 semifinalists will advance to the finalist level, and these students will have the opportunity to compete for 8,200 Merit Scholarship awards.
