Democratic leader rethinks resignation

By Times Staff Writer

TAMPA - Hillsborough County Democratic Party chairwoman Janee Murphy has reconsidered and will not resign.

During Monday's Hillsborough County Democratic Executive Committee meeting, Murphy quit, saying accusations of alleged wrongdoing against her - including leadership failure and fiscal irresponsibility - detracted from the party.

Later, during the same meeting, the credentials committee presented a report of an investigation that cleared Murphy of the claims brought against her by vice chairman Bob Keenan. The executive committee overwhelmingly rejected Murphy's resignation and urged Keenan to resign in two separate votes.

Hearing that her supporters needed her back, Murphy said she changed her mind.

"I'm going to stand up, and I'm not going to run away," Murphy said. "I'm going to go back and I'm going to fight with my party members, and I'm going to face my detractors."
