Commissioners to discuss county taking over utilities

By Times Staff Writer
Published September 25, 2005

Florida Governmental Utility Authority officials say the authority was created to help local governments manage their utilities and to help counties eventually buy the systems back.

At Tuesday's County Commission meeting, commissioners will discuss whether they want county staff to begin that process. "Now is the time," said commission Chairwoman Vicki Phillips, who placed the item on the meeting agenda. Acquiring the FGUA's 11 systems in Citrus County would provide a much needed boost to the county utility system's customer base, she said, and create a system of accountability. The commission will meet at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Citrus County Courthouse, 110 N Apopka Ave., Inverness.
