Two primaries in sharp contrast

ST. PETERSBURG - Eight candidates, two City Council seats and more than a month of knocking on doors, candidate forums and mailers.
Now it's up to the voters of Districts 4 and 6 to decide who should advance to the Nov. 8 general election.
The two races couldn't be more different in tone. The District 4 race features three very similar women who have conducted a very cordial race - at least so far.
Meanwhile, District 6's five candidates are extremely different in both background and outlook. There have been personal attacks and insults, as well as some very frank discussion about the direction the city is heading.
With hurricanes dominating the headlines, interest in the race so far has been low. While early voting began nearly two weeks ago, turnout has been scarce. Fewer than 100 people had cast a ballot as of Friday morning.
Only the voters in the contested districts get to vote in the primary. But the entire city will get to choose between the top two finishers in each race.
