Executives rebound after stints at struggling companies

Published September 26, 2005

If working at a troubled company were a career-ending thing, a lot of Tampa Bay area executives would be out of a job.

Fortunately, that's not the case, as two local executives proved this month.

Darrin Campbell, who resigned as chief executive of Anchor Glass Container Corp. in March and stayed on as a consultant until the Tampa bottlemaker filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last month, has landed a position at portable-storage company PODS Inc. Campbell will lead the Clearwater company's disaster-recovery operation, which delivers and stores water and other staples to affected areas. He also will manage PODS' long-distance moving business and explore options for international expansion.

Meanwhile, former Danka Business Systems executive Michael Popielec has been named a group president at Carlisle Companies Inc., a Charlotte, N.C., manufacturer. Popielec will lead six company units, including Carlisle Braking Systems and Carlisle FoodService. He served as chief operating officer of the Americas group at Danka, a St. Petersburg company that lost $264-million over the past two fiscal years, until May 1.

In fiscal 2005, Popielec took home more than $480,000 in salary and bonus and an option to buy 150,000 shares of Danka stock. In the 12 months ended Aug. 7, Anchor paid Campbell $310,000.
