APOLLO BEACH - Eleven children were taken to the hospital with minor injuries after a teenage driver rear-ended a school bus Tuesday morning, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said.

Sheriff's office spokeswoman Debbie Carter said that the school bus was stopped at a railroad crossing on Big Bend Road east of U.S. 41 at about 6:30 a.m. when Benjamin Manning, 18, of 409 19th St. in Ruskin tried to pull around the bus.

Finding himself blocked by a car in the other lane, Manning then tried to pull back behind the bus and rear-ended it, Carter said.

Manning was cited for traveling too fast for conditions. The children who were injured ranged in age from 10 to 17, Carter said.

Ray Yeakley, spokesman for Hillsborough County Fire Rescue, said all of the injuries were very minor and that most of the children were taken to the hospital as a precaution. The uninjured children were taken to their schools, he said.
