TAMPA - Investigators haven't yet nailed down a motive, but they say 18-year-old Brandon Gormley set fire Tuesday night to a north Tampa mobile home a few lots away from his own.

Gormley was arrested at 11:45 p.m. in the mobile home park on one count of first-degree arson, a felony. The arrest came 31/2 hours after the fire at 10803 N Annette Ave., Lot 2. The fire injured no one but caused about $11,000 in damage.

Tampa Fire Rescue Capt. Bill Wade said witnesses said they saw Gormley at the mobile home when the fire started. Gormley lives in a mobile home six lots away, according to jail records.

It is not clear yet how Gormley - listed in jail records as a kitchen employee at St. Joseph's Hospital - started the fire, Wade said.

Wade said the American Red Cross is helping the mobile home's two residents, 36-year-old David Coger and an unidentified companion, find temporary shelter.

On Wednesday, Gormley was being held without bail in the Orient Road jail.

Riverview woman killed after van hits her car

BRANDON - A 61-year-old Riverview woman was killed Wednesday after her car was hit by another vehicle while she was trying to make a turn.

Crista Ferrari was driving west on Bloomingdale Avenue about 4:40 p.m. Wednesday and entered the left turn lane to go south on U.S. 301, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

As Ferrari started to make the turn onto U.S. 301 in her 2000 Hyundai sedan, the car was struck by a northbound 1999 Chevrolet van driven by 61-year-old Anne Stiller of Riverview, the patrol said.

Stiller was not injured, the patrol said. Both were wearing their seat belts.

Charges were pending the outcome of the investigation.

Fight over soccer game leads to man's arrest

TAMPA - A 33-year-old man was arrested on warrants Tuesday that charged him with trying to kill a man who broke up a fight between his brother and the suspect over a game of soccer.

Jairo Jadir Argueta-Hernandez, with an unknown address, fought with the victim's brother in January over a game of soccer, said Tampa police spokeswoman Laura McElroy.

After the brother, Jose Mendoza Marquez, 31, broke up the fight, Argueta-Hernandez threatened to kill him, McElroy said.

In early July, Argueta-Hernandez tried to stab Mendoza at a convenience store, McElroy said.

Argueta-Hernandez confronted Mendoza again on July 28 in front of Mendoza's house on Alva Street, she said.

He stabbed Mendoza in the chest, but a gold medallion blocked the knife from entering his chest, McElroy said.

Then Argueta-Hernandez stabbed him twice in the back, she said. Mendoza suffered only minor injuries.

On Tuesday, Hillsborough deputies arrested Argueta-Hernandez. He was charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault and a separate charge of solicitation of a prostitute.

He was booked into the county jail on no bail.
