  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Clearwater man wants to regain his mobility

By LINDA D. COLE and INGRID L. KOHLER
Published October 1, 2005

Can you believe October is here? This month is a busy time for REXers: Outdoor arts and crafts shows start popping up, and the weather finally starts to get cool enough to have a yard sale at which shoppers don't run the risk of heatstroke. But if it's still too warm out for you to think of doing that, why not just read the column and do some garage sale browsing in the comfort of your own breakfast nook?

William LaBounty of Clearwater hopes that a power scooter is part of the inventory in Exchange Land today. Lung cancer is making it a struggle for William to walk very far, but naturally he doesn't want to sit on the sidelines. A nice, clean scooter-chair in good working condition would be a perfect way to put him back in gear. Please call (727) 791-0451. Sharon Heywood and her husband of New Port Richey tell a tale that is familiar to those of us with homes built in the '50s and '60s. That was an era in which earth tones, particularly in tiles and bathroom fixtures, weren't favored by earthlings. Aquamarine tubs, violet toilets and green sinks proclaimed the upbeat spirit of the times.

Take the Heywoods' bathroom - its tiles are a lovely peach trimmed in black, its other furnishings blue! The couple have been able to find a peach sink at a garage sale, and they're putting off replacing the tub to a more propitious moment, but they would like to conclude their five-year quest to replace the john.

Unfortunately, one replacement toilet that was the perfect peach in bright sunlight turned out to be a disappointing beige when installed.

The Heywoods hope that if you're remodeling and plan to recycle your working peach toilet you'll let them know. They'll be glad to pick it up. Just call 727 841-7395 or e-mail sials_101@msn.com Oh, one more thing: If the Heywoods succeed in flushing out a peach model, a perfectly good beige specimen will be available to REX readers.

For the past couple of decades, Rebecca Martin of Largo has confidently, contentedly cooked with her three Guardianware pans. It's funny how a human can bond with a pan, but Rebecca knows the ties that link a cook with her utensils. But only one of her pans still has its signature glass top: The 2-quart round pan and the triangular one with rounded edges are going topless.

Searching for the lids online has proved fruitless, so Rebecca hopes that readers with suggestions about where she might locate replacements will call her at (727) 586-5143. INSTRUCTIONS ALERT! Mina Jordan of St. Petersburg needs instruction manuals for a Brother electronic typewriter, model AX-475 and a Singer Stylist sewing machine, model 543. Call Mina at (727) 323-8121.

Nancy Colcord of Anna Maria has a box of new fabrics to pass along. Some are children's prints, some are colored sheets, others have miscellaneous patterns. In the past, Nancy has made children's comforters for various charities' Christmas collections, but she is currently awash with fabrics that may be useful in some of your projects. Please call 941 778-7631 or e-mail nmcolc@aol.com

Brenda Jordan-Reynolds of Dunedin wants to find a quilter. Brenda's mother had gathered the materials to make a quilt for Brenda, but died before she was able to start it. Brenda would love to have the completed quilt, but she doesn't quilt. If a reader has the time to either teach Brenda the art, help Brenda with the work or complete the project, Brenda would be most grateful. Please contact her at 727 734-5917 or bjordanr@tampabay.rr.com

Folks in the Spring Hill area can do something neighborly for Carole, a new resident in those parts. She is interested in taking a catering class but has been unable to locate any information about classes in that locale. If you can fill in the blanks, please send an e-mail to graybeal@mailbug.com

Darren Owens of St. Petersburg owns an 8mm projector and has miles of film, but the means of retrieval went kaput. We suspect that Exchange Land holds an inexhaustible supply of 8mm projectors, so consistently are readers' requests for them filled. If you have a key to the Owenses' memories, please call 727 448-9174 or e-mail runrunner2002@aol.com

Frances Davies, who lives in the Holiday-New Port Richey area, has a foot-high stack of the French magazine Paris Match - most of them 2 years old - to give away. Frances would like to have older issues of Veranda magazine ('80s or '90s). Please call (727) 942-9356.

- Send requests to Reader Exchange, Floridian, St. Petersburg Times, P.O. Box 1121, St. Petersburg 33731 or e-mail cole@sptimes.com Requests will be accepted only by mail or e-mail. This is an exchange column, so we will not run items that are for sale. Readers must agree to publication of phone numbers, including area code.
