Rutgers gets rare conference win

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers built a big halftime lead then held off Pittsburgh 37-29 on Friday, its fourth Big East win in five seasons and first three-game win streak since 1992.
In the conference opener for both, Rutgers (3-1) led 27-0 at halftime and 34-14 in the fourth.
Pitt (1-4) closed to 37-29 with 7:26 left on Tyler Palko's touchdown to Derek Kinder and two-point conversion to Darrell Strong. But on Pitt's next possession, Ryan Neill sacked Palko on third and 9 from the Rutgers 20, and Adam Graessle's desperation pass on a fake punt fell incomplete.
Pitt had one more possession, but Palko's pass was tipped by defensive back Corey Barnes and intercepted by Brandon Renkart at the Rutgers 34 with 1:58 left.
ARIZONA: Receiver B.J. Vickers acknowledged he received fraudulent credit for two classes at Los Angeles Trade Tech. A day before the season opener, he was declared ineligible because Santa Monica (Calif.) College revoked his associate of arts degree. Vickers is retaking algebra and English 101 at Pima (Ariz.) Community College but under Pac-10 rules cannot enroll at Arizona or any other conference school. He did not say what schools he is considering.
GEORGIA: Guard Josh Brock ended his career because of repeated concussions. Brock suffered his third during fall practice and was dazed during a scrimmage Tuesday. The junior, who started 15 games before sitting out last season after shoulder surgery, will remain on scholarship and be a student coach.
BAYOU CLASSIC: The Nov. 26 game between Louisiana rivals Grambling and Southern was moved to Houston after being forced out of New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina.
MEN'S BASKETBALL: The NCAA approved Cincinnati's request to make transfer Ronald Allen eligible to play this season instead of waiting the normal one year. Allen, a 6-foot-9 junior center, had been attending Xavier in New Orleans but enrolled at Cincinnati after Hurricane Katrina forced the evacuation of New Orleans. Last season, he averaged 4.9 points and 2.4 rebounds in 19 games. ... Washington forward Mike Jensen will miss at least the first six weeks of the season after surgery on his left shoulder. Jensen, a senior who averaged 6.3 points and 4.1 rebounds last season, dislocated his shoulder two weeks ago during a pick-up game.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Arizona will pay about $7,500 for Sunday's funeral and burial of Shawntinice Polk. The two-time All-Pac-10 center, who would have been a senior this season, collapsed and died at the McKale Center on Monday. A pulmonary blood clot caused the death, the Pima County medical examiner said.
WOMEN'S SOCCER: Two second-half goals lifted host Tennessee past Florida 2-1. ... Rachel Ross' second-half goal gave host USF a 1-1 tie against DePaul.
MEN'S TENNIS: Florida won three of five singles matches but lost two of three doubles matches at the Gator Invitational, a round-robin tournament. The Gators face Miami this morning.
VOLLEYBALL: USF lost its conference home opener 24-30, 30-21, 30-21, 30-16 to Pittsburgh. ... Gabriela Saade and Sara Ellis had 15 assists to lead visiting Tampa to its 11th consecutive win, 30-20, 30-15, 31-29 over Florida Tech.
